Astrocytoma: Dynamic Duo

Autumn-Astrocytoma

Working As A Team To Fight Astrocytoma

Although Autumn started with Compass to Care in January, it was not her first time receiving treatment for Astrocytoma. She’s been in and out of the Children’s Hospital of Alabama for this regrowing tumor since 2014. In December, after her most recent stint of Proton radiation, an MRI showed Autumn and her mom, Shamarold, an all-too familiar result, that the tumor had come back once more.

However, there was no time to do anything other than get Autumn back into treatment to keep trying. Time and time again, devoted mom Shamarold has risen to the challenge and kept her child’s disease at bay. And Autumn, not a child anymore, has become a teenager in the 7 years since her diagnosis. This year, they made the 120 mile roundtrip to the hospital each day for six weeks straight to get Autumn to proton therapy, with Compass to Care as their newest team member. This round finished early this month, and Shamarold tells us that Autumn has been feeling well. They’re just waiting on an MRI to let them know if the treatment has been successful.

For Compass to Care, it is a privilege to help duos like Autumn and Shamarold fight cancer. They have the will to beat it, no matter how long it takes – it’s up to us to provide the way. Click here to find out how you can help more kids like Autumn.
