Tamari’s Journey to CARE & BACK

9-year-old Tamari has already shown remarkable strength and resilience for her young age due to her having to go through much more than many other children her age. Bravely battling Leukemia, Tamari is currently receiving cancer treatment at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL. A few years ago, she and her mother traveled a long way to the United States in search of life-saving care for Tamari, a journey filled with much uncertainty but even more courage and hope.

After already enduring being sick and moving to a new country, Tamari unfortunately experienced a relapse just a month ago. For her family, this has meant more frequent hospital visits and even greater emotional and financial strain. As a low-income family far from home and without a vehicle of their own, reliable transportation quickly became a critical need.

Through Compass to Care’s CARE & BACK program, Tamari and her mother have been provided with 50 Uber rides to and from the hospital, ensuring they were always able to get to treatment and appointments even during this challenging time. This program utilizes the Uber and Lyft ride-share networks to secure safe, reliable, and readily available transportation for families without access to a vehicle.

This assistance has made an immensely meaningful difference in their daily lives, with Tamari’s mother sharing with the Compass to Care staff: “As a mother, I am so grateful for the transportation provided to and from the hospital. It has been a great help to us since we are a low-income family, and this allows us to have the peace of mind and security knowing that our daughter arrives home safely and protected.”

For Tamari’s family, these rides represent more than transportation—they provide peace of mind, stability, and one less worry during an incredibly difficult journey. Tamari’s courage, and her mother’s unwavering love, continue to inspire us, and we are honored to stand beside them and support them as they move forward with hope.
