Last night, Compass to Care was invited by the Chicago Blackhawks for their Hockey Fights Cancer event. Danielle Villari Swets, our COO, and I were invited to walk the purple carpet which honored cancer fighters and survivors.

As we waited for our turn to be called, we started chatting with the survivors standing next to us. One was a little girl, who was being accompanied by her mom. As we chatted more, her mom noticed Danielle’s Compass to Care shirt. She said- oh Compass to Care helped us. ❤️❤️❤️

We found out the little girl was Abigail. She had traveled to Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago to be treated for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She went into remission in August. Her mom got choked up telling us how important our support was during Abigail’s treatment. They are a family of 8 (including 2 sets for twins!) and her husband had to take off work to help care for Abigail.

They needed our help and because of our AMAZING DONORS we gave them a place to turn. There are moments in life when you just end up at the right place at the right time and this was one of those moments.

We got to see with our own eyes how the generosity of others flowed to this child, who was now being honored as a strong childhood cancer survivor. So as we head into the Season of Giving, I just wanted to take a moment to truly say THANK YOU. Your support changes lives and gives children, like Abigail, moments like last night.

According to the press release from NUDM, each year many deserving charities submit remarkable applications to be NUDM’s primary beneficiary. The NUDM Executive Co-Chairs narrow this list down and present it to the executive board. The board conducts several rounds of interviews, keeping the needs of both Northwestern and the beneficiary in mind. Through lengthy deliberation and additional interviews, the primary beneficiary is chosen. As a result of these efforts, Compass to Care was selected unanimously by the entire Executive Board!!!! 

If you are unfamiliar with NUDM, it is one of the largest independent student-run philanthropies in the country and has raised MORE THAN $1 MILLION for its beneficiaries in each of the past nine years. Compass to Care has applied to be the NUDM Beneficiary for the past six years and has made it to the interview round of the application process two times prior to this year.  

“Though it is certainly a long-shot to have 22 individuals come to a unanimous decision to choose your organization over the many amazing organizations that apply, I have always hoped that someday we would find a group that would fall in love with our mission and we would be named the beneficiary.  And that day has come,” commented Compass to Care founder, Michelle Ernsdorff-May. 

“This decision to choose Compass to Care as the NUDM 2021 Beneficiary will change our organization forever.  It will give us the opportunity to invest in our growth, with the goal of supporting 100% of the children who meet our beneficiary profile within five years.  I have cried so many tears thinking about what this funding will truly mean for children and families across the United States. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude for Ayesha Goswamy & Cami Steppe, the NUDM 2021 Co-chairs, and the entire executive committee for choosing to fuel the fight against childhood cancer via Compass to Care,” added Ernsdorff-May.

Throughout the past three years, our Associate Board has doubled in both size and impact. Now with a lineup of 12 talented, successful and selfless young professionals, this group works year-round planning fundraising program to further the impact of the Compass to Care mission. Helping to lead this group is Vice President Ryan Wilks.

As an individual living with Cerebral Palsy, Ryan understands the challenges and feelings that many of our kids often experience during their journey through treatment. While not the exact same as our brave cancer warriors, Ryan remembers watching his parents exhaust every option and go to the ends of the earth to give him every chance at a “normal” life. It was this understand that drew Ryan to Compass to Care three years ago. “When I learned about the mission of the organization, I was immediately taken back to my childhood, watching my parents juggle getting me to my speech, OT and PT appointments while getting my older brother to t-ball and basketball practice,” Ryan said. “I knew right away that I needed to put my energy towards Compass to Care. If our work as an Associate Board can take a morsel worry away from one parent, and get their child that much closer to remission, then every bit of our work is worth it.”

Now, a Writer within Corporate Communications at United Airlines in Chicago, Ryan gives his time to Compass to Care planning Associate Board events such as networking happy hours and the Gold Ribbon Gala, volunteering at many of our events (Catch him working the bubble machines at the Bubble 5K) and developing the strategy and direction of the Associate Board.This Month, Ryan will celebrate his 30th birthday on May 24. He kicked off his birthday month with a 30 Days of Giving campaign to raise $5,000 to help our children get to the treatment they need. ]]> Our 2019 Fashion Show https://www.compasstocare.org/2019-fashion-show/ Tue, 03 Dec 2019 18:10:51 +0000 https://compasstocare.org/?p=10372 On November 9th, in the sparkling glow of Chicago’s skyline, Compass to Care hosted our 8th annual fashion show. This year, our models were eight of the kids we support. Each child dressed in an outfit that represented what they want to be when they grow up. Mia chose to walk with her mom because she says that someday, she wants to be just like her.

Even though she’s only four-years-old, Mia seems born for the runway. Rocking a matching outfit with her mother, Manuela, Mia beamed and spun to the applause of the dozens in attendance. When Board Member Brian Greenblatt took a moment to talk about the mission of Compass to Care, Mia dashed to his side for an adorable curtain call. To anyone who witnessed her energy and spirit, it would come as a huge surprise that every seven to ten days, she travels 80 miles to receive treatment for Leukemia.

The event could not have been possible without the generosity of our donors, and the enthusiasm of our escorts. Gabriel – whose dream is to grow up to be Anthony Rizzo – got to walk down the runway with five players on the Northwestern baseball team in full uniform. Summer’s face lit up when she saw the scrubs and lab coat we picked out for her. She wants to be an OB/GYN nurse someday. Dominic, who loves animals, shared the runway with a real-life zookeeper from Lincoln Park Zoo!

For a few magical hours on November 9th, the kids were able to be whatever they wanted to be. While no one in attendance could forget that they were there to support childhood cancer patients, they also got to see the kids’ incredible personalities, their ideals and hopes for themselves. They got to see a dream for the future.

At Compass to Care, we promise to do everything in our power to protect that dream. The fashion show and included silent auction were a great success, raising vital funds that will directly go to kids like Mia, Gabriel, Summer, and Dominic. With your help, we have been able to keep Mia fighting for the day when she can become just like her mom.

]]> Gold Ribbon Gala Twinkling Lights https://www.compasstocare.org/2019-gold-ribbon-gala/ Mon, 07 Oct 2019 16:38:05 +0000 https://compasstocare.org/?p=10308 At 6 PM last Friday, gold-colored lights switched on in the Shapiro Ballroom. Compass to Care’s Associate Board Member Hannah Ferstel painstakingly selected them in anticipation of the annual Gold Ribbon Gala. “I asked the patrons to try every light they had until we found one that fit the theme,” she said.

Like Hannah, the other fifteen members of the Associate Board worked diligently for months to make the Gala a success. This meant gathering items for our Silent Auction, making connections with sponsors, and inviting attendees. But there was also a less concrete task that they had to accomplish. They had to inspire others to believe in the mission of Compass to Care.

Clearly, their hard work paid off. Guests began to stream through the doors at 7, until over eighty people had arrived to support childhood cancer patients and their families. The Silent Auction was a hit, too, with twenty-four items that included Second City tickets and a week in Siesta Key, Florida.

One of the highlights of the night was when the attendees got to view a professionally produced video about two of our kids: Blake and Lauren. The video was an in depth profile, highlighting both the hardships faced by childhood cancer patients and their families, and their reasons for hope and perseverance.

Between the Silent Auction and Gala tickets, over $14,000 was raised. These funds will go to pay for things like gasoline, parking, and other expenses to get kids suffering from cancer to treatment. ]]> Compass to Care’s Cubs Adventure https://www.compasstocare.org/compass-to-care-cubs-adventure/ Mon, 07 Oct 2019 16:37:34 +0000 https://compasstocare.org/?p=10302 Ten kids from Illinois and Iowa had no idea they were going to meet one of the best pitchers in baseball when they got home from school that Friday. But that all changed when Compass to Care’s leadership found out that Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs had ten extra tickets for the Monday night game – and he wanted us to come.

Our founder, Michelle Ernsdorff-May, spent the weekend frantically calling every Compass to Care family she could think of that might be able to get to the game. This was no easy task. Some kids traveled over six hours that day to make it to Wrigley in time to meet the 6 foot 4 lefty.

The Cubs organization treated our kids like VIPs from the moment they stepped off Waveland Avenue and into the Friendly Confines. While waiting in the entrance for our tour guides, everyone was able to take pictures with the gleaming trophy case. The kids were given one duffel bag each, complete with a baseball and other assorted goodies. Jaws dropped among kids and parents alike when they caught a glimpse of Javier Baez slipping through security and into the building. But the fun had only just begun.

We were led down to the field by some of the Cubs’ amazing Development team. From there, we could watch the Cincinnati Reds conduct batting practice and other warm-ups. A dense, magical fog descended on Wrigleyville, lathering the tall buildings beyond the bleachers in a white foam. The ivy was lush and green on the brick outfield wall. Everyone from Compass to Care felt like we were lucky visitors to a castle in the clouds where giants lived.

After filing into the Cubs’ dugout on the 3rd base line, we reached the most highly anticipated moment of the trip: the chance to meet the Jon Lester, the Cub and World Series Champion. Jon introduced himself to each of our kids individually. One young lady talked to Jon about his own experience as a survivor of Leukemia. After saying hello, pictures were taken and baseballs were signed until the pitcher had to get back to preparations for a night at the ballpark. The group left the dugout in a daze, saying to one another “can you believe that just happened?”

For the next chapter of this adventure our families were treated to unforgettable seats in shallow right field. Willson Contreras stopped by to say hello to young fans. Foul balls whizzed by overhead, though thankfully not hitting any of us. There were hot dogs and peanuts and home runs. On top of all the once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the Cubs clobbered the Reds 8-2. Considering the losing streak that would begin only the next day and knock them out of playoff contention, one can’t help but wonder if our kids acted as a kind of lucky charm. In that case, we hope the Cubs are as anxious to see us again as we are to see them. Today’s blog is by Connor Watson, a Clarke University Student-Athlete, and Compass to Care supporter. Enjoy!

My name is Connor Watson and I am a second year Clarke student studying elementary education with endorsements in coaching, special education, as well as middle school, where I will be getting concentration in teaching math, social studies, and language arts. Last season, I did an incentive program for Compass to Care by donating money based on my performance as well as my team’s performance. I raised a total of $1,144 dollars from myself and others to end the season, as well as the team going 3-8 on the season.

This year, I will be doing the same thing for Compass to Care, which I am super excited about. I wanted my team to become more motivated this year to win, as I believe we have the best team the Clarke lacrosse program has ever seen. I made my incentives to more of a team based idea, which is for every time the team wins, I will donate 5 dollars, every time the team scores a goal, I will donate 25 cents, as well as if I start a game, I will donate 1 dollar, and for every groundball I get I will donate 50 cents.

I decided to continue my partnership with Compass to Care because I truly believe in their mission in helping with travel cost to families. I believe that if there can be a family that does not have to worry about the travel cost for their child, then it is one less burden for them, and to me, this means a lot. Families should not have to worry about anything besides their child’s health. They shouldn’t need to worry about cost of gas or cost of hotel.

This year, I want to set a goal higher than last year; 2,000 dollars. I want people to see how amazing this charity is and how effective this charity is.

With the new facilities added to campus, it gives the team an extra edge from last year to perform better and perform at the highest peak.
