Darwin is a sweet and spirited 10-year-old boy with a heart full of courage and a love for all things soccer. Whether he’s watching his favorite teams on TV or playing sports video games, Darwin’s enthusiasm is infectious. And if you ask him about his favorite food— hamburgers are always on the top of his list!
This summer, Darwin is especially excited. After bravely completing cancer treatment, he’s looking forward to a season filled with soccer matches and delicious food in Chicago.
His journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. In April, Darwin celebrated a huge milestone—ringing the bell on his final day of chemotherapy at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Surrounded by his loving mom, two sisters, and a team of devoted nurses, it was a moment filled with joy, relief, and hope.
Darwin wants to share a message with other kids going through similar battles:
“Have faith and believe. Have a ton of strength.”
Following his final treatment, Darwin took the next step on his journey—heading to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab for his first prosthetic consultation. Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, Darwin underwent surgery that led to the amputation of his right leg. But with the help of physical therapy and a determination that inspires everyone around him, he’s dreaming of getting back on the soccer field again.
We had the incredible honor of meeting Darwin and his amazing family at the Honoring Mothers Breakfast Benefit Event. His mother, Ana, courageously shared her story and offered a heartfelt message to other parents walking a similar path, “Continue to have faith and believe that God is next to you, guiding you through the difficult times.”
Darwin’s strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit reminds us all of the power of hope. We are so proud to stand beside this family on their journey.
